History
In 1977, God placed the needs of the Mandarin speaking Chinese upon
the hearts of several families and two pastors. This marked the beginning of
the Mandarin Fellowship. The group consisted of a little more than a dozen
members, and began with a fortnightly worship service in the small chapel at Seamen's
Mission. With a growing congregation and the closure of the chapel in 1980, the
fellowship sought an alternative venue, the chapel at Baptist Tabernacle on
Queen Street. This went on for two years before the Church was officially
founded in 1982. By then, our worship services took place at the Maclaurin
Chapel in the University of Auckland. “Auckland Christian Mandarin Church” was
officially registered as a non-profit organization in 1989.
Due to the influx of Chinese immigrants from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and other Asian countries in the 80s and 90s, there had been a significant growth in the congregation. In response to this, the church started planning for ownership of a permanent worship venue, and successfully purchased the orchard behind Laidlaw College (formerly the Bible College of New Zealand) in Henderson. The congregation officially moved to Henderson on 21st June 1998.
Our congregation consists of people from 8 to 9 different countries. Mandarin is the mother tongue for most, but there are also others who speak Cantonese or English. For that reason, our Sunday sermons are mainly delivered in Mandarin or English, with Cantonese and English, or Mandarin translations.
The church aims at providing a spiritual home for the Chinese in Auckland. In addition to running various ministries, the church is also very active in discipling, with the hope of helping believers to learn to serve one another on the path of seeking the Truth, to grow as one in the process, and to interact in His love. We are very happy to have you here with us, and warmly welcome you to our church.
